Man Within Compass

The Man Within Compass — or ‘The Rag & Mop’ to locals — is a welcoming, traditional pub with a name as unique as its character. Tucked away on the edge of the Leicestershire village of Whitwick, it’s beer-led and proud of it, with no kitchen and no pretence. Instead, you’ll find a top-quality drinks selection, roaring fires in winter, a super beer garden and a friendly atmosphere.

Landlords Andy and Lynsey took the reins in 2020 and have transformed it into a much-loved local. It’s a place for conversation, laughter, board games and pints, not plated food — although visiting street food vans often serve pop-up fare in the car park. Think burgers, wood-fired pizzas and fish & chips, plus hot pork and beef cobs.

Built from local stone and steeped in history, this is a pub for those who appreciate proper beer and a warm welcome.

So what about the unique name? We spoke to landlords Andy and Lynsey, who said: “The Man Within Compass refers to a traveller who has finished his journey and stays put, rather than going north, east, south, or west.”

As for The Rag and Mop, that comes from a former landlady who used to leave her cleaning gear outside the pub — locals started using the nickname, and it stuck.
