The beautiful town of Godmanchester, which stands on the southern bank of the River Great Ouse on the site of the Roman town of Durovigutum, is home to T & S Thomas, high-class family butcher. The shop, which is very traditional, has been home to a butcher for more than 80 years.
Tim Thomas has been running his own butcher’s shop for more than 14 years, having previously learnt his trade at several local butchers. He has five very helpful staff and one extra on Saturday, and the shop was a previous winner of the Hunts Post Food & Drink Awards, ‘Best Independent Retailer’.
It stocks a wide range of meat, all from local suppliers, and seasonally sells game, including pheasant and rabbit. Burgers and sausages are made on the premises, as are cooked meats such as ham, beef and chicken. Tim’s wife creates a delicious range of homemade pies and crumbles including apple, rhubarb and gooseberry.
As well as passing trade (although be careful when parking as the road has double yellow lines), Tim also provides meat to more than 50 local caterers.
