Castors Pastures in Ailsworth, near Peterborough, is run by Tom, who swapped a career on the railways for farming and turned a long-held ambition into reality.
His focus is pasture-raised chicken, produced with care, patience and proper attention to welfare. The birds are moved onto fresh pasture daily, given space to roam, and raised on a pasture diet supplemented with organic feed. Their water is filtered, too. The result is chicken that is soya-free, GM-free, antibiotic-free and chemical-free.
Tom’s approach puts soil, pasture, biodiversity and animal welfare at the centre of the farm. His birds looked calm, active and well cared for when we visited, and it was inspiring to hear the story behind the business.
Pasture-raised poultry remains rare in the East Midlands, making Castors Pastures well worth knowing about. You can buy the chicken online via the Castors Pastures website and at Moor Farm.
