The Cod’s Scallops Long Eaton
Not many of us can a resist a “chippy tea” or a “fish supper” every now and again. So often though, the tantalising smells of frying fish, salt and vinegar promise more than the reality of the eating experience delivers.
Not so at The Cod’s Scallops in Long Eaton. This delightful place takes the idea of your local chippy to a whole new level. The Cod’s Scallops sells superb fish and chips, all fried in beef dripping, evoking the memories of traditional fish and chips eaten on a breezy seaside promenade.
The emphasis is on sustainably sourced fish and the freshest seafood available. Fish is delivered daily and all the old favourites are there – cod, haddock and plaice, but you can also try less common varieties such as hake, gurnard, herring, bream and skate as well as crab, lobster, oysters and whelks.
The restaurant is relaxed and informal with a cheerful seaside feel to it and friendly, helpful staff. And it is clearly popular, even on the hot and sunny August afternoon we visited people were queuing up for seats and for takeaways.
The Cod’s Scallops is fully licensed with a selection of beers and wines – we enjoyed a few beers with our haddock, chips, proper mushy peas and lovely grilled lobster. If fish is not your thing you can try a steak and ale pie or a black pudding fritter, and swap your chips for a potato salad (and there’s even a pudding menu, if you have space left!).
