There’s a real difference between a quick cosmetic pub makeover and a thoughtful refurbishment carried out by people who understand hospitality. The George Inn falls firmly into the second category.
The George reopened in March 2026 following a substantial transformation by Ever So Sensible, the group behind places including The Marquis Wellington in Leicester, Fothergills in Nottingham and Le Mistral in Sherwood.
The changes are immediately noticeable. The layout has been opened up to bring in more natural light, while reclaimed materials and antique touches give the pub warmth and character without feeling forced. Old floorboards have even been repurposed into wall features. There’s also a mix of spaces depending on what sort of visit you want: sofas by the log burner for a quiet pint, a lively bar area, two spacious beer gardens and a games corner with darts and table football.
Food is central to what The George now offers. The menu mixes pub favourites with more modern seasonal dishes and plenty of lighter options. There’s a strong small plates selection too, with a three-for-£20 offer encouraging sharing and grazing.
Sample dishes during our visit included Spring Lamb Chimichurri with lamb rump, asparagus, lyonnaise potatoes and wilted spinach, plus grilled Padrón peppers with lemon hummus and focaccia. Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find Lincolnshire Scotch Egg with piccalilli, hog roast and manchego croquettes, moules marinière, thyme salted pork belly, beer battered fish and chips, Andalusian chicken and chorizo linguine and an 8oz ribeye steak with triple-cooked chips.
There’s also a good spread of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, including pesto and pine nut gnocchi, a mushroom and truffle pie and a plant-based burger.
Desserts include white chocolate crème brûlée, lemon panna cotta tart and sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb ice cream.
The George works equally well as a casual stopping point for coffee and lunch, a relaxed family meal or an evening pub dinner with friends. With its smart refurbishment, broad menu and welcoming atmosphere, it already feels firmly back at the heart of village life.
