The Knockerdown

The Knockerdown Inn, overlooking Carsington Water in Derbyshire, is perfectly located for campers, hikers or watersports enthusiasts… or just lovers of good food and drinks! It’s a cosy gastropub with a focus on quality food in relaxed surroundings.

The pub is over 200 years old and was built by the Gell family, owners of nearby Hopton Hall. It was established as a pub called The Greyhound in 1838, but since changed hands multiple times, including a stint under Marstons. In 2023 the Hopton Hall Estate bought it back with a determination to run a local pub and eatery, but also preserve some local history. As a result, you’ll see some Gell family heritage in the décor around the place.

Today’s Knockerdown is a traditional British pub with an extensive beer garden and play equipment for the kids. The interior has a bright dining room with views over the water. The area has a log burner for a more intimate and cosier feel.

The menu offers traditional British pub dishes, locally sourced, such as pies, burgers, fish & chips, sharing platters, sandwiches and salads. The portions are generous, priced reasonably and presented beautifully. On Sundays, there are roasts, all served with yorkies and all the trimmings. And in the summer, they have a food truck in the garden serving hot dogs, burgers, mac & cheese & nachos.

It’s a perfect spot to enjoy a drink and a bite overlooking the water!
