Not every pub needs gimmicks and not every pub needs gastro-level food. Some pubs just need dedicated staff and very well-kept beer. In many ways The Old Cross Tavern in Hertford is a bit of a throw-back, but in the best of ways. This is a pub that’s all about excellent beer, great chat and good times.
In 2024 it was taken over by James Ashbourne, a veteran of the pub industry and a devotee to cask ale. And this commitment and focus was rewarded recently when the Old Cross Tavern was awarded the Timothy Taylor’s Champions Club plaque. This award recognises the care and consistency they put into serving their classic pale ale, Landlord.
At any given time there are at least 6 hand-pull cask ales on tap, plus craft beers, lagers and ciders. If you’re looking for faux Spanish or Italian lager that you’ll find in a lot of pubs, The Old Cross is simply not for you. This is a place for people who appreciate the craft of producing and keeping excellent beer.
And if you’re hungry, grab a slice of pork pie, some mustard and a bag of crisps to accompany your pint. Frankly, what more do you need?
