The Rose & Crown is an historic pub. Located in the heart of Tilton on the Hill, this Grade II listed former coaching inn is presumed to date back to 1707. And historians believe that because of its timber-framed core, it may well be a lot older than that.
But now, it’s right up to date. It describes itself as “a lovely country pub with a bistro restaurant”. And it’s easy to see why. Visually there’s a beautify combination of traditional stone walls, beams, fireplace with modern decor and a wonderfully airy and bright conservatory.
It’s rapidly earning a stellar reputation for its carefully crafted menus, which change monthly and are 90% gluten free. Led by head chef Rob Thompson, a former MasterChef contestant, this quintessentially English pub offers a beautifully designed interior, with a stone, candlelit restaurant as the main dining area. The garden room with log burner and fire pits is perfect for larger gatherings and celebrations.
Menus evolve with the seasons, featuring dishes like yellowfin tuna carpaccio with crab mayo and Asian sesame glaze, or spiced parsnip soup with citrus crème fraîche. Highlights include the duo of duck — pan-fried breast and panko-crusted heart — alongside wild boar lasagne with Romanesco sauce and the cola-braised short rib burger.
Don’t miss their Fish n’ Fizz events or the desserts that showcase this accomplished kitchen’s creativity.
