The Stag & Hounds

The Stag & Hounds in Burrough on the Hill was our Dining Pub of the Year 2020/21. It was reopened by chef Dom Clarke in late 2019. Before that, it was known as Grant’s Free House, but Dom decided to give the pub its old name back, which is more in line with the area’s hunting heritage.

The food is seasonal, local and right out the top drawer. Moreover, the menu changes weekly.

Before arriving in Burrough on the Hill, Dom was head chef at The Barn at Moor Hall in Lancashire, where he earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, two AA rosettes, and a ‘Best Newcomer’ award from Lancashire Life magazine. His credentials are excellent news for diners in and around Melton Mowbray and Rutland.

Typical main courses at The Stag & Hounds include the likes of rump of local lamb with baby gem lettuce and fresh curds and shepherd’s pie; and garden gnocchi, house pickles, caper butter sauce and Parmesan cheese. Dom uses plenty of local game such as pheasant and venison in his cooking.

An added bonus is the Parish microbrewery next door to the pub, which brews real ales served in the Stag & Hounds.
