Ugly Bread Bakery & Cafe

Nottingham’s vibrant Hockley area is a food lover’s paradise with a host of independent eateries, cafes and bars and new ones popping up seemingly every day. The Ugly Bread Bakery & Cafe is at the top of Pelham Street and sells, well you guessed it, “ugly bread”. Actually it sells rather gorgeous bread, but as all the loaves are baked by hand on the premises they are rather different from the uniform offerings of the supermarkets.

This delightful place has a laid-back vibe – relaxed, casual and friendly. And there’s a stunning array of loaves, a huge variety of filled foccacia, baguettes and superb mezzalunna, as well as sourdough stone-baked pizza (waiting invitingly on the counter to be cooked to order in the pizza oven) and amazing Sicilian-style sweet cannoli and hand-made cakes, all available to eat in or takeaway.

The bakery is the brainchild of Jade Vendon and the emphasis is on quality and tradition: the sourdough breads, for example, have been fermented for at least 24 hours using minimal yeast and salt. There is seating outside if the sun is shining, some seating downstairs and a balcony upstairs where you can watch the hustle and bustle of Hockley below, or the action in the open kitchen. The bakery is also just a stone’s throw from Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena and a great place for a pre-event snack.

Best lunch in the city centre! This is my fave place to grab a quick lunch in the city! Without a doubt the best sandwiches in town I personally recommend a focaccia they also have stone baked pizzas which are equally as good and great coffee! They also have great regular deals and offers!

City view cafe - delicious breads and snacksWe went for Italian salads with fish (two choices). Very friendly staff - food freshly prepared and for lunch was just right for us. Small restaurant above bread shop with city views which at Christmas was great. Just across from Lace Market tram stop if like us you can't walk far.
