Small Food Bakery is a quirky local bakery specialising in small-batch, high quality handmade breads and pastries. Great Food Club Sourdough Producer of the Year 2020, the bakery is located in a Victorian redbrick former primary school on Seely Road in Nottingham. Now known as Primary Studios, the old school is a base for a number of creative and artist spaces.

Small Food Bakery operates from the old school kitchens and, at the time of writing, is open to the public on Fridays 10am-6.30pm and Saturdays 9am-2pm. It also runs sourdough-making workshops under the leadership of head baker, Kimberley Bell.

All of Small Food Bakery’s products are naturally leavened, slowly fermented for up to 30 hours. This ancient method of bread-making ensures a rich flavour and enhanced nutrition. The bakery sells a range of sourdough loaves, including the magnificent ‘Radford Wild’ (and, when we visited, the ‘EY Up’ wheat and rye sourdough), plus croissants, sausage rolls and other pastries, and uses seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible. Also on offer are pizzas, crispbreads and cakes. All products are additive-free and low in salt.

The bakery contains a small number of seats so you can sit in and enjoy a coffee and a slice of sourdough toast with local honey, and watch the hustle and bustle of the kitchen.

Everything here is excellent, but the Radford wild bread is superb and stands comparison with any bread in this country or beyond. High praise indeed, and fully deserved, Kim!

  2. Avatar Jim says:

There has never been a better time to enjoy artisan bread, bringing back the flavours that should be there. There are several places I go to get good bread in Nottingham, but the sourdough produced here is, in my opinion, by far the best of the bunch. The crust has a lovely bite and deep flavour. The bread texture is elastic with an open crumb structure. It is delicious fresh, lasts for days, and is superb when toasted. It is worth the trip just to get your bread here. If it is on offer, in season, also try the rhubarb cake.

Kim and colleagues make the best bread ever! These days we only buy bread from Small Food, usually their Radford Wild but they always have some interesting variations. I would also recommend the doughnuts and other delicious pastries, as well as tasty pizza. Another nice thing is that you can have a drink and eat what you’ve just bought! The bakery is situated in an old Victorian school and there are other things going on there so it feels good use is being made of the building.

I try to go every Saturday with the kids to get our weekly sourdough fix!! The Radford Wild is outstanding.
