Batch Fifty Two, Baldock

Batch Fifty Two, on Baldock’s Church Street, is Dan Laffineur’s dream, brought to life. This is one of those special coffee shops that make a real impact on a community.

Outside, stylish black exterior and signage; inside a modern, clean layout with a beautiful counter. Plus plenty of charging points for those who need to plug in their macbook!

The coffee comes from Plot Roasting and is excellent. And there’s plenty of cakes and sweet treats to go with it. But the menu really comes to life if you’re there for a brunch or lunch. There are clever twists on café staples. The smashed avo for example is topped with salted cashews and chilli flakes; the porridge is made with almond milk and has a spiced apple compote and chai-soaked raisins and pecans. There are just clever touches, wherever you look.

It just feels like this team are all over the details: branding, coffee and the menu. But actually this only works if it’s combined with excellent staff and service, and there’s plenty of that to go round at Batch 52!
