Beyond Belief Brewing Co., based in Borehamwood and founded in 2021, is taking the beer experience in a different new direction. Instead of following the tried and trusted process for brewing beer, they are using surplus food as the basis of their brews.
The business is linked to Borehamwood business Ugo Foods which is a 4th generation family run pasta-making business based in the town. And it’s because of surplus pasta from the production process that gave them an idea – can we turn this into beer? Freddie Ugo, co-founder, and Benn Lee are the driving force behind the business and are real evangelists for great beer and sustainability.
The essence of the business is very simple – to produce drinks with positive impact in every can. And they reckon that with every pint of beer consumed, a meal’s worth of pasta is prevented from going to waste. 50% of the base malt is replaced with surplus materials, meaning they use half the amount of malted barley than regular beer.
And all this effort is worth it! They have an innovative range of beers including pasta IPA and lager, flapjack stout and new products are hitting the shelves all the time. But these beers aren’t novelty, far from it. They taste good and more than hold their own against more traditional brews. They’ve even won a ‘Waste Not Want Not’ award from The Grocer this year.
This is a really smart Hertfordshire business combining sustainability with innovation and we expect them to go from strength to strength!
