Chloé Gourmet
Located on Cank Street in Leicester, Chloé Gourmet is a both a Francophile’s and a cake lover’s dream. Not a cupcake in sight, think classic tarts, precise patisserie and buttery viennoiserie made largely onsite in an open kitchen. The likes of almond croissants, pain au chocolat, macarons and decadent Paris Brest choux buns come tumbling out to replenish the display – if your favourite isn’t there, fear not – it might appear soon.
Chloé is the nom de cuisine of Assia, who is French – after a few years baking for friends and family she started an online business before opening her cafe. Standards are really high and if prices veer into treat territory, everything appears worth it. On a recent visit a ‘Royale’ elicted sighs of pleasure – rich, intense, cocoa-dusted chocolate mousse sat on a crunchy layer of almond praline and thin biscuity base. Sandwiches at lunchtime are great too – the croque monsieur is so much more than a mere cheese and ham toastie, one bite and you’re on holiday.
I get the feeling that many people are still to discover this little gem. Loosen your belt and pay a visit – personally I’m building up to a full afternoon tea (two days notice required).
