Colston Bassett Dairy
Colston Bassett Dairy makes traditional Stilton and Shropshire Blue cheeses. It is a farming co-operative, established in 1913.
It produces cheeses using milk from local farms – all within 1.5 miles of the dairy in the Vale of Belvoir. The recipes have been handed down through the generations.
Colston Bassett Stilton won Best PDO/PGI Cheese at the 2018 Royal Bath & West Show in Somerset. Its Whole Blue Stilton (made with animal rennet exclusively for Neal’s Yard Dairy) took home two golds, with a third going to Shropshire Blue. In 2017, its Stilton bagged the Best Stilton Cheese Award at the Artisan Cheese Fair in Melton Mowbray.
Jason Hinds of Neal’s Yard Dairy says: “With only four cheesemakers in the last 100 years, Colston Bassett has maintained a tradition and quality of cheesemaking unparalleled in the Stilton world. It is the only Stilton that Neal’s Yard Dairy has carried for the last 33 years.”
