The Elephant & Castle in Amwell, just outside Wheathampstead, is a beautiful country pub inside and out. It dates back to the 18th century and is full of character and history. It’s popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders, as well as families looking for a destination pub away from the hustle and bustle of nearby towns.
Having been closed for a few months, Chase Inns Proper Pubs have taken it over, and spent time returning it to its former glory, but without changing the feel of the place. Chase Inns founder Paul has pubs in Old Chesham and Great Missenden, but when The Elephant became available it was an opportunity not to be missed. Not least because the Operations Director Manuel had formerly run The Ele with his wife Manuela. And now they are back behind the bar!
There’s always a range of quality cask ales on tap, and the food menu keeps things nice and simple. look out for pub classics like burgers, fish & chips and Sunday roasts. Plus nibbles like padron peppers, crispy squid or house terrine. And the desserts are very good too.
The Elephant & Castle is more than the sum of its parts. Inside it’s a cosy traditional pub with fire and historic well! Outside there’s plenty of space for families and two tipis for hot summer days or long autumnal evenings. So whether you’re out on a dog walk, or need a pit stop on a bike ride, you should stop at The Elephant and Castle. You won’t be disappointed!
