Old Theatre Deli

This is a slick, modern-feeling deli/cafe in the centre of town, a stone’s throw from the magnificent Minster, making it a great place to refuel after a visit to Southwell’s stunning 12th-century religious building.

Old Theatre Deli – so called because it is housed in an old Georgian theatre – sources its food and drink carefully, finding top-notch, often local ingredients and showcasing them in the deli and on its menus. Owner Sarah says: “We produce our own food, keep food miles low and showcase some of the best British producers around. We have an exciting range of English cheeses and wines.”

So you’ll find shelves stacked with the finest biscuits for cheese, preserves, chocolates, oils and other delicacies. There are also artisan loaves from Hambleton Bakery and nearby Welbeck Bakehouse, while behind the polished glass of the deli counter are the likes of Hockerton Ham and other cooked and cured meats, plus fine cheeses and pastries. If you’re dieting, the homemade cakes will shatter your resolve in seconds.

The cafe menu – covering breakfast and lunch – changes regularly.

The coffee is good, it’s fully licenced, and the atmosphere is pleasant. There are also a number of outdoor tables if the weather’s good.
