The Red Lion in Thurgarton, located three miles from Southwell, had been closed for two years until a committed team of three stepped in to buy it – Gemma Carey, general manager, Kyme Howells, head chef, and Julian Benton. With the help of the villagers, the trio have breathed new life back into this once-thriving pub.
During our visits, the food has never disappointed. On a midweek trip, we soaked up a delightful atmosphere, and the staff looked after us well. A starter of whipped goats’ cheese, walnuts, chicory and crostini hit the spot, as did the oriental confit chicken spring roll with pickled radish. Special mention to the pan-fried skin-on chicken with pont-neuf terrine and chicken sauce – delicious.
The Red Lion at Thurgarton is part of a good-news story – about the community coming together to provide a much-needed village social hub. What they’ve created, with its impressive food, is far more than that. We’ll be back.
