Tucked away in the little village of Frithsden is a wonderful local gem, The Alford Arms. An award-winning foodie pub on the edge of the Ashridge Estate.
This is the type of place that you reward yourself with after a long walk around the woods or the Chiltern Hills. And it really is a reward!
Becky and David Salisbury have been running it for over 25 years. Once it was part of a bigger portfolio of venues, but now all of their energies go into The Alford Arms. They take customer service very seriously and will do everything they can to ensure visitors have a great time, especially 4-legged friends!
The menu changes every two weeks. When we visited starters included baked sardine filets, bubble & squeak with bacon and free range chicken livers. The choice of main courses made it hard to choose, and we struggled to pick from confit pork belly, whole Cornish sole and free range coq au vin amongst others!
At the Alford Arms, there’s a real focus on sustainability and seasonality They work with many local producers such as chickens from Potash Farm near Tring, bread from Darvell’s in Berkhamsted and flour from Redbournbury Mill near St Albans. Everything on the menu is cooked fresh daily.
Plus there’s no shortage of options at the bar. Lots of local cask ales, over 20 gins and a great range of wines too.
Book a table, or opt to walk-in, it’s fine either way at The Alford Arms. A beautiful place for a drink or a bite to eat. But please don’t call it a ‘gastro-pub’!
