The Bishop’s Cave, St Albans

The St Albans branch of The Bishop’s Cave is the younger sibling of the Bishop’s Stortford original, founded in 2015. This one, located on Holywell Hill is sensibly located within a stone’s throw of the cathedral. Both are the brainchild of father and son team Steve and Dan Leak.

The Bishop’s Cave is a hard business to put in a single box. Wine bar? Yes. Beers? Yes. Cheese & meat platters? Yes. Deli products to take away? Also yes.

But it doesn’t feel at all weird. Actually the contrary. It’s the sort of place that works really well in the evening for a couple of glasses of wine and a cheese board. It also fits perfectly after a stroll around the Abbey or after a pint on Sopwell Lane. Some customers are just there to grab a bit of cheese and a bottle of wine to take home.

So cheese, wine, beer bar, with deli and takeaway.

For a small place, it packs many punches. There are over 100 wines, a similar amount of different beers and over 40 different types of cheeses. Plus the friendly staff know their products really well and are very happy to help you match the drinks and nibbles.

The atmosphere is cosy and convivial and the pricing is sensible too. Two glasses of wine and a sharing board for approximately £20 is very good value.

If you’re after a slightly different experience from a standard pub or restaurant, The Bishop’s Cave is well worth a visit!
