The Potting Shed is a huge favourite of mine (James). We regularly stroll down on a weekend for a brunch or just decide to stop for a coffee if we’re picking up some goodies from the farm shop.
The Potting Shed is a bustling café at the back of Carpenter’s Nursery and Farm Shop just on the edge of both St Albans and Sandridge. The nursery itself has existed for over 100 years, established in 1923 by Fred Carpenter Junior. Now it’s run by Fred’s great grandson James Carpenter. Today it includes an excellent farm shop with daily fresh bread, cheeses, fresh vegetables, quality meats and a refill area.
The Potting Shed itself has been on the site since 2018 and is open for breakfasts and lunches. Depending on what time you arrive you can pick from full English, eggs benedict or breakfast roll. And if you’re a little later, the menu opens up to include lamb flatbread, quiche of the day, chicken & waffle or their chicken burger. In my humble opinion, it’s a major error to leave The Potting Shed without having a portion of their moreish hash brown bites!
Everything on the menu is created using their own or locally sourced produce. There’s also a great range of drinks, pastries and cakes too. You can reserve a table, but there’s plenty of spots reserved for walk-ins and it rarely takes long to have you seated!
