With two AA Rosettes and a focus on small plates and sushi, Alora in Mapperley is a modern, bright and breezy neighbourhood restaurant. Experienced head chef Henrik Horvath, formerly of the Finch’s Arms in Rutland, and his team have created a confident, contemporary menu designed for sharing. The cooking impressed on our visit – fresh, bold, well-executed flavours throughout.

Highlights include whole butterfly BBQ mackerel with lemon and capers, Thai beef salad with crispy wonton and ponzu, and BBQ hispi cabbage with smoked almonds. Sushi is another strength, with the Alora Torio uramaki – tuna, salmon, seabass and chilli miso – packing a spicy, satisfying punch. Veggie and vegan options are also well considered.

On Sundays, the focus shifts to traditional roasts, including butter-poached chicken breast, treacle-cured beef rump-cap and 12-hour pork belly – all served with full trimmings and rich red wine gravy.

Cocktails are a big part of the offer and the drinks list is long and impressive, making this a great spot for a relaxed evening out.
