Essen General Store

Essen General Store is an exceptional food and drink shop in Beeston, with an equally strong café at its heart.

Opened by Ed and Sam in 2021, this High Road deli has become one of Nottinghamshire’s best places to buy carefully chosen produce. The team are highly selective about what they sell, from cheese and charcuterie to natural wines, beer, store-cupboard ingredients and treats for the weekend.

The cheese counter is a major draw, but Essen is more than a place to shop. There’s a large communal table where you can sit down for coffee, cakes and sandwiches, making it a useful stop whether you’re stocking up or pausing for lunch.

On our latest visit, the ØKENDE sourdough sandwiches stood out: generously filled, full of flavour and made with proper care. You may also find excellent cakes and bakes from Nottingham’s Tough Mary’s Bakehouse.

Essen has a modern, relaxed feel and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. It is run by people with superb taste and a clear point of view, which is exactly what makes it worth seeking out.
