The Specialty Coffee Shop

The Specialty Coffee Shop is located on the corner of Friar Lane and Maid Marian Way in Nottingham. This simple coffee shop is a real find and a notch above the chain coffee places around the city. Owned and run by young Italian couple Michaelangelo Franco and Lucy Giacone, their knowledge of and passion for coffee is clear from the moment you walk through the door. Both Michaelangelo and Lucy have worked previously as “coffee consultants” and spent time on an organic coffee farm in Costa Rica, studying the process of making coffee from bean to cup. At their shop, each cup is brewed individually using your preferred technique, including the pour-over method that is currently taking coffee shops by storm. House syrups and spice mixes are available too.

If tea is more your thing, this coffee shop also serves a range of seasonal flavours. It offers regular ‘vintage teas’ that include exceptional-quality tea and homemade savouries and cakes.

The Speciality Coffee Shop has a contemporary, clean and simple feel. Warm wood and industrial touches complement comfortable chairs at the rear. There is a range of delicious-looking homemade cakes and savoury breakfast and lunch options. The space is uncluttered and delightful. We have visited often and seen a diverse and cosmopolitan set of customers each time. All are made welcome by the friendly staff. On one visit we also enjoyed quite possibly the best chai latte we have ever tasted!

In the crowded landscape of city centre coffee shops, this place truly stands out. We will be back, often!

Favourite little treatWandered in one morning for a cheeky espresso and was greeted by the nicest man I think I’ve ever met! The passion he gave to my humble morning brew was fantastic, I am now a devout regular

Brilliant brunch!Decided to try The Speciality Coffee Shop having read about it on the GFC website. Straight away I received a warm greeting even though they were clearly busy. My creamy cappuccino arrived promptly and I happily took in the buzzing yet relaxing atmosphere whilst I waited for my ‘breakfast in bread’ to arrive. It certainly had the ‘wow’ factor being beautifully presented on a rustic wooden board and what a wonderful combination of flavours too. Truly delicious. The owner(?) came over to check I had enjoyed the food and apologised for the slow service as they were getting used to a new menu. I thought this level of care and attention was lovely, and an apology unnecessary as I felt the time I waited reflected the time that such great food takes to prepare. Definitely a place to return to.

The Speciality Coffee ShopFound this little gem by chance, only 3 weeks ago and was very impressed with the friendliness of Lucy and 'a regular' who offered for us to share her table . (Limited seating available). I had a peppermint tea and avocado with salmon on Hambleton bakery bread. It was drizzled with flavoursome Tuscan olive oil and was a huge portion, but absolutely delicious and kept my fuel reserve high for hours! The cakes looked fantastic too and GFC's recommendation has reminded me to pop in again, next time I'm in Nottingham. A very welcome find!
