With floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors that fling wide open on sunny days, Fothergills is one of Nottingham’s best spots for al fresco-style dining with a view – Nottingham Castle and the famous Robin Hood statue are right outside. But it’s just as inviting in winter, when the warm interior, flickering candles and characterful Victorian architecture provide a cosy and welcoming escape.
We visited for a weekday lunch and were impressed by both the service and the food. Highlights included mussels with chorizo and tomato, and paprika-marinated chicken skewers – full of flavour and beautifully presented.
The Grade II-listed building was designed in 1883 by local architect Watson Fothergill, and today its original features are showcased through a relaxed, stripped-back design.
Fothergills offers a bistro-style menu with global flair – think crab arancini, lamb rump with olive tapenade, red snapper risotto and a brownie for dessert. There’s also a popular two-course lunch offer, a solid selection of beers and wines, and well-crafted vegetarian and vegan options.
