Kayal, Nottingham
Kayal Nottingham is one of four restaurants nationwide, including one in Leicester. The chain was founded in 2005 by Jaimon Thomas who, initially was planning on opening an Italian restaurant. Fortunately his mother had other ideas and Kayal was formed. Its roots are very much in the southern Indian coastal district of Kerala.
The ethos of the brand is based on healthy dishes based on fresh ingredients. This family-run group is passionate about Kerala cuisine and specialise in seafood dishes.
The menu is very well rounded though, and has plenty of meat, vegetarian and vegan alternatives. It is authentic to Kerala tradition and you will be tempted by dishes that don’t appear on an average high street Indian restaurant. Starters include chayakkada’s (tea shop snacks) such as deep fried banana slices, achappam or konju (king prawns in batter with chilli). There are various filled Dosas (a kind of pancake made from lentil and rice) including chicken, lamb or vegetarian options.
But the seafood section is definitely the big attraction. The Kayal fish curry, sea bass, or salmon Mappas are all superb. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Njandu curry based on fresh crab, you will get messy eating it though!
