Kuru Kuru Sushi

People often ask if there’s anywhere in Leicester to get good sushi and I’m always shocked they haven’t discovered Kuru Kuru. But then again I suppose this tiny outlet in a low-key shopfront hidden behind traffic zooming along Welford Road is the definitive hidden gem.

Owner Shyiam is a time-served sushi chef with experience in London who chose Leicester for his own business. Kuru Kuru has been there since 2014, producing some of the best Japanese food in the city. The full range of sushi and sashimi is especially good, using fish from a leading Leicester fishmonger.

Personal favourites include the substantial softshell-crab handrolls and the crispy salmon skin rolls, but fans of eel, scallop, tuna and more are all well-catered for. If you’re not sure, try one of the mixed platters or just ask for help. If your appetite is more substantial, the comfort-food rice bowls with the likes of chicken katsu curry or eel teriyaki are also highly recommended.

Be aware that Kuru Kuru is tiny and basic – much of the trade is takeaway or delivery. But squeezing in to eat at one of just two or three tables is a great experience with the chance to watch your sushi being made in front of you.
