The Red Lion at Kniveton is one of those rare pubs that ticks all the traditional pub boxes. Run by Hannah and Kevin of the award-winning Kniveton Cider Company, it’s full of character and warmth, with a focus on real cider, great beer and properly cooked food. We love the friendly welcome and community feel – it’s a proper pub.
The menu is a treat: pub classics, steaks, burgers, veggie and vegan options, all homemade. We particularly enjoyed the salmon, gammon and lamb tagine, served with a generous helping of veg and some of the best chips or mash we’ve had. The steaks, from a brilliant local butcher, are always cooked spot-on. Don’t miss the cider sauce – we now ask for it with everything!
With excellent drinks, including cider from their own press, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it’s no surprise The Red Lion was named CAMRA Ashbourne Pub of the Year 2024 and East Midlands Cider Pub of the Year 2023 & 2024.
