Taquero, Nottingham

A great new addition to Hockley’s restaurant scene, Taquero, has opened its doors on Heathcoat Street. Co-owners Dan Lindsay and Chef Jacque Ferreira, the award-winning team behind Bar Iberico and Iberico World Tapas, have added another venue to their growing stable of independent Nottingham eateries.

Taquero has been designed to look and feel like an authentic taquería. With the terracotta and green on the outside, to the high ceilings, exposed brickwork and bright coloured tiles on the inside, you’ll feel like you’re a few thousand miles from the centre of Nottingham! Plus it’s walk-in only, so no point trying to reserve a table!

The menu isn’t overwhelming but it’s full of flavourful options. To start, there are five different salsas including La Maya and Chipotle and a range of antiquos (“little cravings”) such as chorizo quesadillas, masa empanadas and ceviche. But the main reason to visit is definitely to try the tacos! Each order comes as a pair so worth selecting a few and sharing around the table. There’s an even split between meat, fish and vegetarian dishes including lamb barbacoa, octopus al pastor and plantain with black bean: all served in corn tortillas. There’s a decent vegan range and some helpful advice on the menu for people with allergies.

A visit to an authentic Mexican restaurant wouldn’t be complete without a drink or two, and Taquero doesn’t disappoint! There are plenty of tequilas, mescals and some innovative cocktails (and mocktails) to try! So grab the family and friends and pop down for a taco and mescal, but maybe order a taxi for the journey home!
