The Marquess of Exeter, Lyddington
The Marquess of Exeter is a proper little gem in England’s smallest county of Rutland. Based in the village of Lyddington, near Uppingham, it’s been under new management since the spring of 2022 and one of the main reasons it’s become so popular is its chef, Krishnapal Negi.
Krishnapal arrived in Rutland following a 20-year stint in London where he won a Michelin Bib Gourmand cooking at restaurants such as 1947 London and Tangawizi (which he launched in 2004). His Marquess menu is inspired by recipes he loved as a child growing up in the Indian Himalayas and includes authentic cuisine including Chicken Dum Biriyani, Wild Mushroom Cake Masala and Butter Chicken.
In the summer months, you can dine al fresco in The Meadow or just enjoy a drink in the charming surroundings and, for those who are travelling from further afield, there are 17 rooms.
