The Wellington, known locally as The Welly, is a lovely foodie pub, located in the charming village of Welwyn. It’s a former coaching inn, steeped in history and said to date back to 1352. And apparently Samuel Pepys dropped in to stay in the 1600s!
Following a fire in 2009, the building required a major renovation. The owners understandably focused on creating distinct areas for dining and drinking. And décor-wise, it’s a great blend of country pub with a modern twist.
The Wellington is run by General Manager Sam and Head Chef Rob. They’re committed to serving freshly prepared, authentic and delicious food that has something for everyone. The menu is updated seasonally and the specials change monthly. There’s a combination of pub classics such as burgers, fish & chips, pies as well the chef’s signature beef wellington and fantastic roasts on Sundays!
This is a very dog friendly pub, as our Herts editor James discovered when he took his golden retriever Lexi there for her very first pub outing!
And if you’re planning on being in Old Welwyn for a few days, The Welly would be a great place to stay. There are 6 individually decorated rooms, all with historic features, views of the church and roll-top baths.
A lovely spot, in a fantastic location – definitely worth popping in if you’re in Welwyn!
