Webb’s of Hitchin

Walking into a greengrocer feels like a step back in time. With the growth of convenience stores and the power of supermarkets, this type of business is few and far between these days. But Webb’s of Hitchin is proof that a family business with a deep understanding of its products and a commitment to its customers can survive and thrive.

Nestled in the shadow of St Mary’s Church, in the heart of Hitchin, Webb’s has stood the test of time. It’s been trading since 1976 under the leadership of John and Sylvia Webb. Initially it was a stamp and coin shop but over time the fruit and veg took precedence. Since the Covid pandemic, it’s been youngest son Andrew who has taken over the running of the business. He has focused exclusively on being a greengrocer, focusing on fresh seasonal produce from local farmers, for a loyal customer base.

As well as fresh fruit and veg, you can also pick up other produce from providers like Hertfordshire Honey, Fife Bakery. Plus there is a whole section dedicated to bird food and dog treats.

Plus if you’re time-poor – Andrew will make you up a customisable veg box to come and collect.

This type of business deserves to be successful and feels like an integral part of the local community. Here’s to the next 50 years!
