Chicken George has fried chicken in its DNA. Founder George Cheah spent years working for KFC before opening his own takeaway in Luton in 1985. His son Chris, a professionally trained chef with experience in some of the UK’s leading restaurants, took over in 2015 and transformed the family business into an award-winning regional favourite.
Hitchin was the first step in that expansion, opening in 2020 on Bancroft. It was Chicken George’s first sit-down restaurant, combining its popular takeaway offering with a restaurant and bar.
A Bedford restaurant followed in 2022, introducing a dedicated sports-bar concept, before Chicken George expanded into St Albans.
Located in The Maltings Shopping Centre, the St Albans restaurant brings the brand’s distinctive personality to a larger, colourful setting, with street art and neon lighting.
Across all locations, the menu centres on freshly prepared fried chicken, including wings, strips, burgers and a generous selection of sauces and sides. It’s a fitting expression of the brand’s philosophy: ‘Chicken for the People’.
Four decades after George opened his first shop, Chris continues to build on the family’s reputation for seriously good fried chicken.
