George Street Canteen

George Street Canteen is one of those places that it’s a little hard to find, but you’re very glad when you do. It’s tucked down a little alleyway just off George Street in St Albans which opens out into a little oasis! Of course there’s a good few tables inside, plus a counter with takeaway goodies; but there’s also an outdoor marquee out front so you can eat al-fresco all year round. But what not everyone realises is there are a few additional tables out the back and a glorious wildlife nature garden!

The business is owned by Julie and Kevin Lee and has been going for nearly a decade now. Kevin’s the chef and Julie’s out front making the customers feel really welcome.

This is a lovely spot to go for a brunch or light lunch. For breakfasts it’s a choice of full English, veggie breakfast or a breakfast burrito. For lunch there are salads, wraps, toasties or our favourite: the Mexican bowl which is avocado, refried beans, salsa & tortilla with two poached eggs. But definitely keep an eye out for the specials board.

And before you leave, why not grab a jar of their homemade honey from their own honey bees? Or if you’re feeling thirsty, there’s even George Street Canteen gin made with their honey by the wonderful folks at Campfire Gin.

The coffee’s good, the food is excellent and the welcome is consistently wonderful, whether you have two legs or four!
