The Hermit of Redcoats

The Hermit of Redcoats in Titmore Green, in the Little Wymondley area between Hitchin and Stevenage is a lovely country pub and restaurant. The name comes from James “the Hermit of Redcoats” Lucas, a Victorian eccentric who lived a reclusive life nearby at Redcoats Green and was even visited by Charles Dickens for his unusual way of living.

Today, the pub is managed by Anna and Seth Perry who are both on their second stint at The Hermit. Most recently they had been running The Royal Oak in Naseby which had been a Great Food Club favourite under their leadership. Now back in their native Hertfordshire, in a pub they both know and love, the pair have picked up where they left off.

It’s a nice looking pub from the outside, with a well-kept garden and good sized car park. Inside, two distinct areas of pub and restaurant but without it feeling unbalanced. The staff are really welcoming and there’s a really pleasant atmosphere whether you’re just there for a drink with your dog, or having a meal with friends or family.

Seth’s menu evolves with the season, using freshly sourced ingredients from trusted local producers. Pick from pub classics such as fish & chips, burgers and steaks or pick from seasonal main courses and specials. It’s modern British with a global twist. Plus there are sizable and very tasty roasts on a Sunday too. But do leave room for a dessert, the sticky toffee pudding is superb!

This is a lovely pub with excellent food, run by great people. Fully recommended!
